Scarlet Wins Game Two With Late Rally

Jake McLean helps Scarlet to second win with three hits and two RBI Friday.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Game two of UNLV baseball's Scarlet & Gray World Series followed the same script as Thursday's game one, with Scarlet rallying in the latter innings with eight unanswered runs to knock off Gray, 8-3, at Earl E. Wilson Stadium Friday.

Jake McLean came up big, once again, for Scarlet with three hits and two RBI. McLean, who was hitting ninth, and teammates Vince Taormina and Austin Pfeifer combined for five of the team's nine hits as well as five RBI and three runs from the 7-9 spots in the batting order.

Gray broke open the scoreless contest in the third with three runs off back-to-back extra-base hits from Jack-Thomas Wold and Max Smith. The former knocked one run in with a one-out double, while the latter went deep for a two-run shot off Scarlet's Cameron Jabara.

The lead did not last long as the Scarlet drew even in the fourth off RBI from a Vince Taormina double, a Chase Hanson groundout and a McLean single. Gray's Paul Richy was responsible for all three runs allowed.

Scarlet carried the momentum into the fifth with five runs after two outs had been recorded. The squad loaded the bases off singles from Jacob Rogers and Edarian Williams as well as a fielding error on a ball put in play by Taormina. Hanson broke the game open with a two-run single off Tallon Thomason, while Pfeifer added a two-run double and McLean had an RBI single off Bradley Spooner.

STAT OF THE GAME: Scarlet's offense had been limited to only one hit through the first three innings of the game; however, the squad scattered seven total hits over the fourth and fifth innings, and one more in the sixth.

REBEL OF THE GAME: McLean was perfect at the plate with three singles and a pair of RBI, including the game-tying tally in the fourth. He knocked in one more in the fifth to cap Scarlet's eight-run outburst.
