Volleyball sophomore Mariena Hayden earns honor for fourth time this year
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -Â UNLV volleyball sophomore Mariena Hayden has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week, the school announced Wednesday. This is the fourth time this year she's earned the honor.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Hayden, an outside hitter from Belle Plaine, Minnesota, helped the Rebels to wins over UC Irvine and Fresno State in the first and second rounds, respectively, of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) tournament at Cox Pavilion last week. The sophomore led the team in kills (32), kills per set (4.00) and aces (seven) as well as digs (25), digs per set (3.12). She added four assisted blocks and three assists over the two matches.
Against UCI, Hayden had 14 kills and hit .344 with four aces and two assists to go along with six digs and two assisted blocks. Against Fresno State, who the Rebels had lost to twice during conference play, the Mountain West All-Conference selection had a double-double with 18 kills and 19 digs with three aces, two assisted blocks and one assist. Her second ace against the Bulldogs was her 100th of the season.Â
