Ban Named Outstanding Rebel Of The Week

March 7, 2018
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's golf senior Shintaro Ban has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday. This is the second time Ban has earned the honor during the 2017-18 academic year as he previously received the award on Oct. 19, 2017.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

Ban, a San Jose, California, native, led the Rebels to their first team title of the year at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Arizona, Feb. 25-26. The senior earned medalist honors by two shots at 16-under 200, which marked the seventh-lowest score for a 54-hole tournament in Rebel golf history. Ban shot all three rounds of the tournament in the 60s (68-65-67) and averaged 66.67 per round to capture his second individual win of the season and third of his career. Over the tournament's 54 holes, Ban sunk 20 birdies while only carding four bogeys.

Ranked 10th in the country by Golfstat, Ban has finished in the top 17 or better in all seven events this season, including five top 10s, three top fives and two victories. For his performance, he was named Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Week for the second consecutive week.

Ban and the Rebels are wrapping up their annual home tournament, the Southern Highlands Collegiate, Wednesday afternoon after heading into today's final round in a tie for second.
