LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV's Richard Solberg, known as "The Closer" around the Fertitta Tennis Complex, was named the Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Thursday.
The native of Stockholm, Sweden, earned his first such honor after going a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles last week to help the Rebels to a pair of league victories.
Solberg lived up to his nickname vs. Air Force on Friday. With the match tied at 3, all eyes went to court four where he was going to a third set vs. Paul Hendrix when the Rebel junior emerged to clinch it, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. On Sunday against New Mexico, Solberg teamed with Clayton Alenik to help UNLV win the doubles point and then defeated Stepan Holis 6-2, 6-2 in singles play.
This marks the second straight time a Rebel has taken home the award as senior leader Alexandr Cozbinov won the second of his two this season last week.
UNLV is on the road for its final two regular-season matches, including tonight vs. Fresno State at 7 p.m.
