Rebels Bitten Early In Loss To Bulldogs In Fresno

May 17, 2018

Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team (32-21, 13-15 MW) was limited to only one run off of four hits in Thursday night's 6-1 loss to the Fresno State Bulldogs (29-23, 12-16) in Mountain West play at Bob Bennett Stadium. The host Bulldogs jumped out to a five-run lead before the Rebels were able to mount any offense.

UNLV's lone run was a result of a wild pitch that allowed Kyle Isbel to score from third base after he had initially walked to open the fourth.

Nick Rodriguez paced UNLV's offense with a pair of hits. Bryson Stott and Grant Robbins each had one hit â€" a single.

Korby Batesole and JT Arruda combined to register four hits, four RBI and four runs to pace Fresno State's offense. Batesole opened and closed the game's scoring with an RBI double in the first and a solo homer in the fifth. Arruda produced an off a sacrifice fly in the first and another off a triple in the third. Zach Presno and Nolan Dempsey knocked in one run each off a solo homer in the second and an RBI single in the third, respectively.

Rebel starter Alan Strong (7-3) had his shortest outing of the season â€" 3.0 innings â€" in the loss. Strong was touched for five runs off of six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Connor Clark threw 3.1 innings of middle relief. Clark struck out two and held the Bulldogs to one run off of two hits.

STAT OF THE GAME: Fresno State starter Edgar Gonzalez pitched a complete game and shut out the potent Rebel offense. More impressively, Gonzalez struck out seven, which was three more than his hits allowed â€" four.

QUOTABLE: "Fresno State had a couple really good players step up," said head coach Stan Stolte. "(Gonzalez) just carved us up. He showed why he's arguably the best in the conference. They played a better game in all phases and had some big extra base hits. Alan (Strong) was a tick off tonight and they took advantage of that. No surprises, we know this is going to be a super tough series with both teams fighting to make the postseason."

TOURNAMENT WATCH 2018: With two games left in the MW slate, UNR (18-9) and San Diego State (18-10) have clinched spots in the Mountain West Tournament (May 24-27 in San Diego); however, the two are going head-to-head in Reno for the regular-season title. The race for the final two spots in the postseason tourney are within reach of four squads â€" San Jose State (14-14), UNLV (13-15), Air Force (12-15) and Fresno State (12-16) â€" after the conclusion of Thursday's action.
