SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (34-23) and San Diego State Aztecs (38-19) needed 12 innings to decide a winner Friday night at the Mountain West Championship; unfortunately, it was the latter that came away with a 4-3 decision at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
By virtue of their loss, the Rebels will face the San Jose State Spartans in an elimination game at 1:30 pm, with the winner advancing to face the Aztecs at 6:00 pm. If the 1:30 pm victor defeats SDSU there will be an "if necessary" game Sunday at 1:00 pm.
UNLV opened the scoring with three runs in the third off run-scoring hits from Dillon Johnson and Nick Rodriguez as well as a sac fly from Nick Ames; however, SDSU countered with three runs of its own with off two hits and a sac fly.
The affair remained scoreless the following 8.5 innings until the Aztecs got another sac fly, this one coming after the bases were loaded off a hit-by-pitch, a walk and an intentional free pass.
REBEL(S) OF THE GAME: Rebel started Trevor Horn threw a season-best 8.0 innings and struck out two against three runs off of nine hits and one walk, while third baseman Dillon Johnson went 4-for-5 at the plate with one double, one RBI and one run scored.
STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV's offense was held to seven hits in the game with six of those coming off of SDSU starter Harrison Pyatt, who allowed three runs. Three Aztec relievers limited the Rebels to only one hit in 7.1 innings of relief, and faced the minimum of three batters between the sixth and 12th innings.
QUOTABLE: "I've never been more proud of an effort in 25-plus years of coaching," said head coach Stan Stolte. "We had so many times we could have just mailed it in, but didn't; even to the last pitch. Bryan Menendez showed so much heart and toughness; it was impressive to watch. It was a great game in a playoff-type atmosphere and both teams left it all on the table. Unfortunately, we couldn't push a run across the last nine innings."
