Spartans Fend Off Rebels' Comeback Bid Sunday

May 6, 2018

Box Score

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team (30-19, 11-13 MW) matched the San Jose State Spartans (21-24, 11-12 MW) run for run through three innings of play; however, the Bay Area squad broke the game open with three runs in both the fourth and sixth to distance itself from the host Rebels en route to a 10-8 win. Despite falling behind by five runs, UNLV fought back late in the contest with one run in the eighth and two more in the ninth in the Mountain West affair played at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

The Rebels began their comeback bid in the eighth with a one-out solo home run from Grant Robbins, who contributed three hits with two RBI and two runs in the game. In the ninth, Robbins helped keep the inning alive with an RBI single after one run had already scored and the team loaded the bases off a single and a pair of two-out walks. Unfortunately, the Scarlet & Gray left the potential game-winning run standing on first base when the final out was recorded via strikeout.

Bryan Menendez gave the Rebels an opportunity to get back into the game with three scoreless frames of relief. Menendez entered the contest in the seventh and only allowed one hit off of a total of 27 pitches. The four pitchers that preceded him gave up 10 runs (seven earned) off of 12 hits and five walks.

UNLV got multiple-hit efforts from five players with Robbins' three hits leading the way, while Kyle Isbel, Nick Rodriguez, Bryson Stott and Jack-Thomas Wold had two each. The Rebels got two runs apiece from Dillon Johnson and Isbel, and two RBI from Rodriguez and Ames.

Early in the game, SJSU scored once in the second and three times in the third, but UNLV was able to draw even with a run off a double play in the second and three more in the third off doubles from Rodriguez and Ames.

In between the Spartans' fourth- and sixth-inning run production, the Rebels got a single tally from Ames, who contributed a sacrifice fly.

THE TURNING POINT: Holding on to a two-run lead, 7-5, SJSU was able to extend its lead to five with help from four walks and only one hit. The Spartans wound up loading the bases with two of the runners reaching via base on balls. One managed to score off a bases-loaded walk, while a two-run single drove the other to home.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Robbins went 3-for-4 in the game with a homer in the eighth as well as singles in the second and ninth. He scored twice and knocked in two runs.

STAT OF THE GAME: SJSU's 4-5-6-7 hitters combined for 10 of the team's 13 hits, and notched a .556 batting average (10-for-18) compared to the remainder of the squad's 3-for-20 (.150) effort.

QUOTABLE: "We got outplayed the last two days; there's no one to blame but ourselves," said head coach Stan Stolte. "We gave up big innings three times after we scored, didn't throw strikes coming out of the bullpen and didn't make a couple plays defensively that could have minimized the damage. The right team got rewarded today."
