UNLV men’s golf has two student-athletes named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars for second straight year.
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's golf program's Shintaro Ban and Harry Hall were named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Wednesday. Additionally, the Rebels were recognized earlier this month as a GCAA All-Academic Team.
Â
This marks the second straight year that UNLV has had a pair of All-America Scholar honorees, as Ban and former teammate John Oda achieved the feat last season.
Â
A record 265 players earned the All-America Scholar honor in Division I this year. To be eligible, student-athletes must have been a junior or senior academically during the 2017-18 season, have competed in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participated in 50 percent of their team's cumulative rounds, hand a stroke average of 76.0 and maintained a minimum cumulative career grade point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Â
To be included on the GCAA's All-Academic Team list, the squad must have recorded a team GPA of 3.00 or higher.
Â
Ban and Hall were also recently named to the Spring Academic All-Mountain West Team for the fourth and third time, respectively. The former recently graduated from UNLV with an undergraduate degree in economics, while the latter is a rising senior studying sociology.
Â
On the course this season, Ban and Hall recorded the two lowest scoring averages on the team with 69.79 and 71.60 strokes per round in a total of 14 tournaments, respectively.
Â
Ban was a PING First Team All-America honoree and All-West Region Team selection as well as the Mountain West's Player of the Year. The San Jose, California native was a finalist for the 2018 Division I Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award and semifinalist for the Ben Hogan Award. These accolades followed a campaign that saw him tie the program's single-season record with four individual titles. In all, he notched six top-five and eight top-10 finishes. He shot par or better in 32 of 43 total rounds played and was in the 60s 21 times.
Â
Hall, who hails from Hayle, England, also represented the Scarlet & Gray on the PING All-West Region Team. His best finish was a tie for second at the Southern Highland Collegiate, which was one of his three top-10 showings on the year. He shot par or better in 24 of 42 total rounds played and was in the 60s 11 times.
