LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Game one of the Scarlet & Gray's World Series turned into a pitcher's duel with only two runs scored in the seven-inning affair at Earl E. Wilson Stadium Friday. The Gray team, which is skippered by junior first baseman
Jack-Thomas Wold, pushed two runs across in the fourth inning and held off the Scarlet's last ditch offensive the bottom of the seventh en route to the 2-0 victory.
With the win, the Scarlet stakes itself to a one-game lead in the best-of-three intrasquad series. Game two is slated for 9:00 am Saturday morning, while a potential winner-take-all contest is slated for one day next week.
Gray was paced by dominant pitching from
Matthew Mitchell, Austin Bryan and
Conner Woods. The trio combined to hold the Scarlet scoreless, while striking out 11 against six hits.
Jacob Godman and John Gaughan had the key hits in the two-run fourth.
Scarlet managed to get runners into scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Woods was able to work out of the threat with a strikeout.
Cameron Jabara tossed three shutout innings, allowing only one hit and striking out five after entering the affair in the fifth for Scarlet.
QUOTABLE: "I felt pretty confident going into the game with Mitchell on the mound and Bryan following him up," said Wold. "They gave us six very strong innings that allowed us to get out of here with a win. We took advantage of some mistakes and got out front and let our defense. Woods came in to shut the door. We definitely have to clean some things up, but it's always important to win game one, and we're going to take it pitch by pitch tomorrow and try to take the series."
