STANFORD, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels and No. 5 Stanford Cardinal concluded their three-game, nonconference series with another one-run affair Sunday at Sunken Diamond. Unfortunately, the Rebels (4-4) were on the wrong end of the decision, as the Cardinal (6-1) fended off a ninth-inning push by the Scarlet & Gray to hold on for the 6-5 victory.
The Rebels entered their final at-bat chasing four runs, but only managed to score three while leaving the potential game-tying and go-ahead runs stranded in scoring position.
Bryson Stott got the scoring started with a two-out, two-run home run to right-center off Stanford reliever Jack Little that brought home
Duke Pahukoa, who had reached base with a pinch-hit, one-out single.
Dillon Johnson and
Jack-Thomas Wold kept the inning going with back-to-back singles, while
Edarian Williams cut the deficit in half, 6-5, with an RBI double to left field before Little recorded the final out via strikeout.
Stott and Williams combined for six hits, three of which went for extra bases, four RBI and three runs in Sunday's affair. Stott broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with a solo home run to right-center, the first of two round-trippers on the day. Williams helped make it a 2-0 ball game in the sixth when he scored off a double by
Max Smith after initially reaching base with a one-out single – the first of four hits.
TURNING POINT: Stanford's offense came alive in the sixth inning with five runs off of four hits and help from a Rebel error. UNLV starter
Chase Maddux had only allowed four hits and two walks to stymie the Cardinal offense through 5.1 innings; however, a pitching change ensued and things picked up for the hosts. The game's momentum flipped with back-to-back home runs and a pair of singles off UNLV reliever
Ryan Hare (1-1) which turned a two-run deficit into a three-run lead, 5-2, for Stanford.
REBEL(S) OF THE GAME: Stott and Williams are both deserving of the designation, as the two propelled the Rebels offensively with their combined .667 (6-for-9) batting average, six hits, four RBI and three runs.
QUOTABLE: "We didn't deserve to win this one even though we battled to the last out," said head coach
Stan Stolte. "We disrespected the game a couple of time with things we are adamant not doing and it came back to bite us. Chase (Maddux) pitched great and left with the lead before the wheels came off in the sixth inning. We didn't make a routine play and overthrew a cutoff, which cost us.
Edarian Williams and
Bryson Stott stepped up all weekend in a challenging environment."
STAT OF THE GAME: Half of the game's 22 hits came from four players in the game, as Stott and Williams provided six hits, while Stanford's Will Matthiessen and Brandon Wulff combined for five. The quartet produced a .688 batting average (11-for-16) with five extra-base hits, four of which were home runs, eight RBI and five runs.
