LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels rallied for a 7-6, come-from-behind win over the UNR Wolf Pack Friday night in Mountain West action at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebels got back-to-back, run-scoring hits from
Dillon Johnson and
Jack-Thomas Wold in the bottom of the eighth, while
Jackson Cofer threw a scoreless ninth to secure another one-run victory for the Southern Nevada squad.
The Rebels and Wolf Pack are both 3-4 in MW play; however, UNLV is now 13-10 on the year, while UNR is 11-9 following Friday's outcome.
The Silver State squads entered the eighth inning tied at 5-all, and both managed to get their first three batters on base; however, the outcomes of the teams' at-bats would end differently. UNR's first two batters reached safely off a walk and a single, while an RBI single by Daniel Perry pushed the visitors ahead by one, 6-5; however, the Wolf Pack left runners on the corners when the third out was recorded. UNLV answered back in its at-bat with three straight hits: a double from
Bryson Stott, a game-tying, RBI single from
Dillon Johnson and the game-winning, RBI double from Wold.
UNLV jumped out to an early three-run lead, 3-0, in the first inning when Stott (single), Johnson (single), Wold (RBI double) and
Edarian Williams (RBI double) connected for four straight hits off UNR starting pitcher Ryan Anderson.
The Wolf Pack scored the next four runs with three coming off a home run from Dillan Shrum in the third and an RBI single by Wyatt Tilley in the fourth. Tilly also added a solo homer in the seventh, which tide the contest at 5-all.
Max Smith had two big at-bats in the middle of the game; tying the contest at 4-all in the fourth after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then hitting a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth to put UNLV up by one, 5-4.
REBEL(S) OF THE GAME: Stott and Johnson both went 4-for-5 in the game and were responsible for six of UNLV's seven runs; each scoring three times. Stott had one double and three singles. Johnson knocked in one RBI and had four singles.
STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV's 1-5 batters combined for 13 of the team's 14 hits, knocked in all seven RBI and scored all seven runs. Overall, the quintet hit .650 with three doubles.
QUOTABLE: "The top of our batting order carried us offensively," said head coach
Stan Stolte. "We need to get some consistent production from the bottom half, but when you're playing that many freshmen, that's going to happen. (Cameron) Jabara and (Jackson) Cofer battled against a very, tough-minded competitive lineup."
