Rebels Stay Home, Host Highlanders

UNLV baseball continues its homestand at Earl E. Wilson Stadium with midweek games against UC Riverside Tuesday and Wednesday.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels remain in Las Vegas and continue their longest homestand of the season - nine games - with a midweek series against the UC Riverside Highlanders. The tussle between the Mountain West and Big West squads gets underway Tuesday evening at 6:05 pm, with Wednesday's contest slated for a 2:05 pm first pitch.

The Rebels and Highlanders enter the week with each coming off a Sunday loss; however, the former had won three in a row prior to its defeat to its intrastate rival UNR, while the latter suffered a 10-0 loss to Tulane in New Orleans to hand the squad its sixth loss in its last seven outings.

UCR is the third Big West squad that the Scarlet & Gray will have played and hosted, thus far, in 2019. The Rebels are 2-1 overall with a win over CSUN last Tuesday and a 1-1 mark versus UC Santa Barbara in late February. Following the conclusion of the midweek series, UNLV will only play one more game against Big West competition, as it will travel to face UCR in Riverside on April 30.

Historically speaking, UNLV and UCR have squared off a total of 43 times with the first meeting taking place in Riverside in 1967. The Highlanders own a five-game lead in the head-to-head series, notching 24 wins to 19 losses. The Rebels have gained ground on the Golden State squad since 2015 with five wins in the last six encounters. The last time the two played was on Feb. 27, 2018, a road contest UNLV won 6-1.

STAYIN' HOME: UNLV is in the midst of playing 15 of 18 at Earl E. from March 5-31; a stretch that started with six straight at home prior to its Mountain West series at San Jose State two weekends ago. The Rebels have played host to CSU Bakersfield, Bradley, Washington State, CSUN and UNR during this stretch and has posted an 8-2 record through 10 games.

HITTIN' THE ROAD: UNLV has only played nine games away from Las Vegas and Earl E. Wilson Stadium, thus far, this season. The Rebels have five more games at home this month, with visits from UC Riverside and New Mexico for two and three contests, respectively.

When the calendar turns to April, the Scarlet & Gray's slate will become more road heavy with 15 of 26 to be played outside of Southern Nevada. The road swing begins April 2 in Phoenix against Grand Canyon and continues April 5-7 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, at Air Force. The Rebels will also take trips to Reno, Phoenix (Arizona State), Riverside (UCR), Houston (Houston) and Albuquerque (New Mexico) through mid-May.

WEEKLY AWARD SWEEP: UNLV claimed both the Mountain West's Player and Pitcher of the Week awards after Jack-Thomas Wold and Ryan Hare helped the team to a 3-1 record last week.

Wold hit .556 with 10 hits and notched a .889 slugging percentage with help from six doubles and four singles. He had at least two hits in all four games, and topped out with four against the CSUN Matadors. He knocked in six RBI and scored three runs. He registered the game-winning hit in wins over CSUN (Tuesday) and UNR (Friday).

Hare notched a win over UNR (Saturday) in 6.0 innings of work. He struck out four against one run off of two hits and one walk. The right-hander retired the first 11 Wolf Pack hitters, and faced the minimum three batters in four of six frames. Additionally, he only allowed two runners to make their way to third base.
