LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels only scored in two innings Tuesday night against the UC Riverside Highlanders, but the 11 runs they pushed across the plate were more than enough to claim an 11-7 win over the Big West Conference foe. The Rebels scored four times in the third to even the score at 4-all, and added seven more in the sixth to turn a three-run deficit into a four-run cushion.
With the win, the Scarlet & Gray improved to 15-11 on the year, with an 11-6 mark in nonconference games. Delving deeper, the Rebels are now 3-1 against squads from the Big West. UCR, on the other hand, sits at 7-14 overall after the loss.
After seeing the Highlanders reclaim the lead, 7-4, with one run in the fourth and two in the fifth, the Rebels mounted a comeback kickstarted by a pair of two-out singles and a walk by
Grant Robbins,
Austin Pfeifer and
Jacob Godman, respectively.
James Gamble got the scoring onslaught started with a sacrifice fly, while
Dillon Johnson and
Jack-Thomas Wold brought two home when both were plunked by pitches thrown by UCR reliever Hayden Petrovick (1-1).
Edarian Williams and
Max Smith knocked in two each off back-to-back base hits – a double and a single – to cap the seven-run outburst.
The Highlanders' Matt Hardy was responsible for the Golden State squad's early four-run lead with a two-run triple in the first and a two-run single in the third.
The Rebels got the offense going in the bottom of the third, scoring a run off a fielding error after they loaded the bases, and then two more came home off a single by Robbins. The inning began with three straight, two-out singles from Johnson, Wold and Williams.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Williams had a hand in five of UNLV's 11 runs in Tuesday's triumph. The freshman went 3-for-5 at the plate with two singles and a double. He recorded three RBI off two of his hits – a third-inning single and a sixth-inning double – and scored a run after both of those at-bats. Defensively, he was perfect in the field with four assists.
STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV's 2-6 batters combined for nine of the team's 12 hits, with multiple-hit efforts coming from Wold, Williams and Robbins. Besides hitting .429 (12-for-21), the quintet also provided nine RBI and eight runs.
QUOTABLE: "That was an ugly win, but we'll take it," said head coach
Stan Stolte. "Everyone out of the bullpen did their job, and (Edarian) Williams had some great AB's to lead us offensively. It will be a tough one tomorrow; UCR has some physical hitters."
