LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels rallied from a five-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning to upset No. 9 Arizona State, 10-9, Tuesday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebels (20-15) sent 10 batters to the plate in their final at-bat and compiled six walks, three RBI singles, a balk and a wild pitch to produce a walk-off win over the Pac-12's Sun Devils (26-5).
Bryson Stott, the reigning Mountain West Player of the Week, came to bat twice in the dramatic ninth, walking in both at-bats. Stott led off the frame taking four straight balls and later concluded it with another free pass; albeit in nine pitches, fouling off three straight 3-2 offerings from ASU reliever Sam Romero (2-1) before the final pitch sailed outside of the plate.
Delving deeper into the ninth-inning comeback, the Rebels' first four batters – Stott,
Dillon Johnson,
Max Smith and
Edarian Williams – made their way safely to first base when three ASU relievers combined to throw 16 balls out of a total of 17 pitches. During Williams' at-bat, Romero was called for a balk to bring home the first run of the stanza, while three more runs crossed the plate off consecutive RBI singles from
Austin Pfeifer,
Chase Hanson and
Grant Robbins.
The Rebels drew even at 9-all when Romero uncorked a wild pitch during
James Gamble's four-pitch at-bat, setting up the unimaginable finish.
The Scarlet & Gray began the nonconference affair loading the bases in both the first and second innings with no outs, but came up empty handed. The Sun Devils; meanwhile, were able to push across three runs in the third after only having one base runner in the first two frames. UNLV cut into the deficit with an RBI double from Stott in the fourth, but ASU got the run back plus one more in the fifth off a home run and a double that was followed by consecutive wild pitches.
UNLV pulled within one, 5-4, in the seventh with three runs off an RBI single from Johnson, a sac fly from Smith and a wild pitch; however, ASU countered with four would-be insurance tallies in the eighth to push ahead by five, 9-5.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Stott reached base safely in all six trips to the plate Tuesday, collecting two hits in two official at-bats as well as four walks. He played a role in four of the team's 10 runs, knocking in two RBI with a run-scoring double in the fourth and the bases-loaded walk in the ninth, and scoring twice off a sacrifice fly in the seventh and off the balk in the ninth.
STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV batters were walked a total of 12 times in the game, and the team cashed in five of those for runs, with the final free pass credited with the game-winning RBI. The Rebels last recorded 12 walks in a game twice in a one-month span against Northwestern (March 21) and Air Force (May 21). On the flip side, UNLV pitching only issued three walks to ASU batters and only one of those resulted in a run.
QUOTABLE: "Crazy ending; really don't know what else to say," said head coach
Stan Stolte. "Arizona State's ninth inning was worse than our eighth, and that was the difference."
