RENO, Nev. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels suffered a 16-8 setback against their intrastate rival UNR Thursday night in the opening contest of the Mountain West series at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park. The Wolf Pack broke open a 3-all contest, outscoring the Rebels by nine runs, 13-4, between the fourth through sixth innings.
After Thursday's affair, both UNLV and UNR sit 9-10 in MW play, while the former is 22-17 overall to the latter's 20-17.
The Scarlet & Gray was paced offensively by
Bryson Stott, who had three hits and scored three runs.
Edarian Williams also had three hits and added two RBI and one run. Both
Dillon Johnson and
Seth Mullis provided two RBI, one run and one hit.
UNLV and UNR were knotted at 1-all after each were able to produce with two outs in the first inning, as Williams knocked in the game's first run with an RBI single, while Conor Allard countered in the home half of the frame with an RBI double. The Wolf Pack took the lead in the second with help from a Rebel defensive miscue and a sacrifice fly. The Rebels drew even with a run in the third and another in the fourth off a sac fly of their own from
Dillon Johnson and an RBI double by
Austin Pfeifer, respectively.
Unfortunately, the affair turned in the bottom of the fourth when the Wolf Pack scored four times. UNR followed that outburst with six more in the fifth and three in the sixth. UNLV, on the other hand, was able to score two in the fifth – run-scoring hits from Johnson and Williams – and another in the sixth – a sac fly from
James Gamble.
The final two runs of the contest came off Mullis' bat – a two-run homer – in the eighth.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Stott reached base in four of five plate appearances, recording three hits and one walk. The Rebel shortstop scored three times after reaching safely off a first-inning walk, fifth-inning double and eighth-inning single.
STAT OF THE GAME: UNR's 6-9 batters produced a .500 batting average off seven hits – in 14 at-bats, six RBI and nine runs, while UNLV combined to hit .125 (2-for-16) with two runs and one RBI in the same spots of the batting order. Both of the Rebels' hits came from
Jason Sharman, who entered the contest as a pinch-hitter in the sixth.
QUOTABLE: "We didn't play good enough in any phase," said head coach Stan Stotle. "In the second inning, the game got a little fast for a couple of our younger kids and we gave them two runs. In the fourth, both teams had a runner on second base with none out; we scored zero, and they executed and turned that into a big four-run inning. Then in the fifth, we did a good job answering with two runs, but our bullpen imploded, hitting two guys, walking three and then six runs later it put us in a big hole."

SILVER STATE SERIES: Not only do this week's games between UNLV and UNR count towards the Mountain West standings, but they have added significance in the Silver State Series presented by IBEW and Nevada Donor Network. Dating back to the 2012-13 academic year, the Rebels have beaten the Wolf Pack five times (2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2017-18) and tied once (2016-17).
To date, the all-encompassing athletic and academic competition between the state's two NCAA Division I programs sits deadlocked at 13.5 with the inclusion of the women's golf results from the MW Championships. For the sport of baseball, the Rebels and Wolf Pack are tied at 2-all, with the three points possibly awarded this weekend or at the MW Championship – like last year – in Reno in late May.
