PHOENIX (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels were done in by a pair of big innings in their 11-5 loss to the Grand Canyon Lopes in a nonconference contest at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark Tuesday. The Rebels (17-14) scored the game's first two runs in the top of the second; however, the lead was short lived as the Lopes (16-12) countered with one run in their half of the second and four more in the third to take control of the contest that ended 11-5 in the host's favor.
The Scarlet & Gray was paced offensively by
Chase Hanson,
Bryson Stott and
Edarian Williams who registered two hits and one run apiece. Overall, the team got 12 hits from nine different players.
Vince Taormina and Hanson got the Rebels started in the second with a single and a double, respectively, and both came around to score off a groundout by
James Gamble and a single to center by Stott.
After GCU scored five over their second- and third-inning at-bats, UNLV got within one, 5-4, with a run in the fourth and fifth off RBI doubles from Gamble and
Max Smith. Unfortunately, the Lopes pushed back ahead by three, 7-4, off back-to-back home runs in the sixth.
The two sides combined for five runs in the seventh, with UNLV scoring once when Stott made his way home off a wild pitch after he initially reached base with a single to left-center. GCU used a walk and three run-producing hits to plate its four and, subsequently, cap the contest's scoring.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Stott had two hits and played a role in two of UNLV's runs scored in the contest. He knocked in one with an RBI single in the first and later scored in the seventh off a wild pitch.
STAT OF THE GAME: There were a total of 16 runs and 27 hits in the game and 11 of the former and 15 of the latter occurred with two outs on the scoreboard. GCU scored eight times with two outs, while three of UNLV's tallies came in the same situation. For the game, the Lopes and Rebels hit .563 (9-for-16) and .429 (6-for-14) with two outs.
QUOTABLE: "GCU was a very experienced, well-coached team, and it showed today," said head coach
Stan Stolte. "We'd creep back into the game and twice our bullpen didn't do their job and give us a chance to hang close enough to pull it out."
