Rebels Lose Midweek Contest To Highlanders

Bryson Stott had three hits, three RBI and one run in UNLV baseball’s 11-7 loss to UC Riverside Tuesday.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels were unable to complete the season sweep of the UC Riverside Highlanders at the Riverside Sports Complex Tuesday. The Rebels (25-21), who won both meetings in Las Vegas in late March, held as much as a five-run lead on two different occasions, but surrendered nine unanswered runs to the host Highlanders (19-26) in the 11-7 loss in nonconference play.

The Scarlet & Gray were paced by Bryson Stott, who provided three hits, three RBI and one run. Trevor Rosenberg and Jason Sharman produced offensively with each having one hit, while the former had two RBI and one run to the latter's one RBI and one run. Chase Hanson and Jacob Godman added two runs apiece.

UNLV got the scoring started with a walk to Hanson and three consecutive singles from Godman, Sharman and Rosenberg – the last two were of the run-producing variety. Stott capped the five-run frame with a three-run home run down the right-field line.

UCR got on the scoreboard in the second and once more in the fourth to pull within three; however, UNLV answered back with runs off a sacrifice fly (Rosenberg) and a wild pitch in the sixth that allowed Hanson and Godman to score, respectively, after both reached base safely off walks.

Unfortunately, the Highlanders took control of the game with six runs in their half of the sixth off a combination of four hits, two walks and two Rebel errors.

The Rebels were able to load the bases in both the seventh and eighth, with one out in both instances, but were unsuccessful in pushing across the tying run. The Highlanders, on the other hand, took advantage of their late scoring chances, getting three insurance tallies in the eighth off an RBI single and a two-run homer.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Stott, who served as the Rebels' designated hitter in the game, had three hits – two singles and a home run – to go along with three RBI and one run. For the game, he reached base safely in four of five plate appearances, adding a walk in the sixth.

STAT OF THE GAME: The Rebels left eight more runners on base in the game – 11-3 – than the Highlanders. Delving deeper, UNLV stranded eight runners in scoring position; five of which came over the seventh through ninth innings. UCR left its runners on base in the second, sixth and seventh, with one each at first, second and third base.

QUOTABLE: "One bad inning of baseball killed us," said head coach Stan Stolte. "We played poor defense, didn't pitch well and made a couple of poor decisions in that disastrous sixth inning. That one bad inning over shadowed some good things, unfortunately. We played a lot of new faces with mixed results; some struggled when the game sped up and it cost us."
