Women's tennis senior Aiwen Zhu earns honor after leading Rebels to a Mountain West Tournament Championship last weekend
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -Â UNLV women's tennis senior Aiwen Zhu has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week, the school announced Wednesday.Â
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Zhu, from Wuxi, China, led UNLV to a perfect 12-0 sweep of the Mountain West and a conference tournament championship. The senior, who was recently named the Mountain West Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, went a combine 6-0 at the top position of singles and doubles. Zhu also became just the third Rebel in history to be named all-conference in both singles and doubles all four years at UNLV.Â
Zhu and the Rebels will compete in the first round of the NCAA Tennis Championships this weekend, taking on Texas Tech in Los Angeles on Saturday, May 4. Zhu also earned a bid to the NCAA Division I Singles Championship, which will take place May 20-25 after the conclusion of the team tournament. She becomes just the fourth UNLV women's player in history to earn back-to-back singles trips by securing the league's automatic bid to the field of 64 as the highest ranked player in the Mountain West.
