ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels were unable to dig out of a three-run hole in a 3-2 loss to the New Mexico Lobos Sunday afternoon in Mountain West play at Santa Ana Star Field. The Rebels pushed across two runs in the seventh to pull within one, but was unable to find the equalizer, stranding the potential game-tying run in both the seventh and eighth innings.
With the conclusion of Sunday's affair, UNLV sits 27-24 on the year and 14-13 in the MW, while UNM improved to 20-27 and 9-15-1, respectively.
The Scarlet & Gray's offense came alive in the seventh with
Edarian Williams and
Max Smith opening the frame with a walk and a single, respectively. After a wild pitch allowed both runners to move into scoring position and two outs had been recorded,
Grant Robbins delivered a single through the right side of the infield to pull the Rebels within one run. Unfortunately, Robbins was left on base when the seventh came to an end.
The Rebels came 180 feet away from tying the game in the eighth, but
Bryson Stott was stranded at second base after he initially led off with a single and later advanced to second off a groundout.
The Lobos got some assistance from a two-out fielding error in the third to take an early 1-0 lead. Ediberto Reyes led off with a double and came around to score three batters later off the grounder put in play by Jared Mang. The lead grew to three in the sixth when Jeff Deimling connected on a two-run double; brothers Jared and Connor Mang scored after initially reaching off a single and walk, respectively.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Williams reached base safely in two plate appearances with one hit and one walk, and scored the Rebels' first run of the game. In the field, he was a perfect 6-for-6 in chances with four assists and two putouts, picking up one of each on a second-inning double play.
STAT OF THE GAME: The Rebels left five runners on base with three of those occurring in the second when they loaded the bases, and one in each the seventh and eighth. They only sent three to the plate in five of the first six innings as well as the ninth. UNM, on the other hand, left eight on with four of those in scoring position.
QUOTABLE: "It was a hard-fought ball game," said head coach
Stan Stolte. "We came out on the short end of it, with both starting pitchers doing a great job. It was a good weekend all around coming in here and getting two wins."
