LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV baseball's
Bryson Stott is one of 14 student-athletes named a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, which recognizes the nation's top collegiate shortstop.
The award, sponsored by Mizuno, will be presented this summer by the College Baseball Foundation. It is named in honor of former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977-80, and died of leukemia at the age of 27.
Previous winners of the Brooks Wallace Award include Henderson native Cadyn Grenier (Oregon State: 2018) as well as current Major Leaguers Dansby Swanson (Vanderbilt: 2015), Trea Turner (North Carolina State: 2014), Alex Bregman (Louisiana State: 2014), Brad Miller (Clemson: 2011) and Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia: 2010).
Stott is ranked in the top 100 of 12 NCAA Division I statistical categories through 51 games and 13 weeks of play. The junior shortstop, who serves as the team's leadoff batter, is 10th overall in base on balls (50), 17th in runs (61), 19th in doubles (19), 23rd in on-base percentage (.498), 29th in total bases (126), 35th in hits (73), 55th in slugging percentage (.636) and 61st in batting average (.369). Moreover, he leads the Mountain West statistically in base on balls, runs and total bases as well as slugging and on-base percentages, and ranks second in doubles, hits and home runs.
The graduate of Desert Oasis High School has also produced 26 multiple-hit, 19 multiple-run and 12 multiple-RBI games, all of which are team highs. Stott has also played a key role in six of the Rebel victories this season, registering the game-winning RBI three times and scoring the game-winning run in three more.
STOTT SUMMARIES:
- Chosen the Mountain West's Player of the Week twice: April 8 and 15.
- Named a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award; an award designated for the top amateur baseball player in the country.
- Prior to the season's first pitch, he was tabbed to the Perfect Game/Rawlings Preseason All-America First Team as well as Baseball America, D1Baseball and the NCBWA's Preseason All-America Second Teams, and Collegiate Baseball's Preseason All-America Third Team.
- During his sophomore campaign (2018), he garnered Third Team All-America status from Collegiate Baseball and Perfect Game/Rawlings, and was a MW All-Conference First Team honoree.
- In 2018, he led the nation in doubles (30) and was second in doubles per game (0.51).
- Split the 2018 summer playing for the Wareham (Massachusetts) Gatemen in the Cape Cod League and USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team.
- He was the MW's Co-Freshman of the Year in 2017.
UP NEXT: UNLV returns to Las Vegas and Earl E. Wilson Stadium for its final three games of the regular season this week with a Mountain West series against the Fresno State Bulldogs. Games one and two are slated for Thursday and Friday, and both are scheduled for first pitch at 6:05 pm. Saturday's finale is also Senior Day with the baseball program recognizing its seven-member senior class prior to the 1:05 pm start.
PURCHASE TICKETS: Single-game ticket prices for the final home series are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors, faculty and staff seniors, and $4 for groups of 15 or more. Fans that purchase tickets online up to three hours prior to first pitch can get them for an advanced single-game price of $5.
All high school, middle school and elementary students are now free under UNLV's new admission policy. To receive free admission, high school students must present valid Nevada area school I.D. at the box office on gameday to receive one (1) complimentary ticket. All other students will receive a complimentary ticket at the box office (no I.D. required). Kids not yet elementary school age will continue to receive free admission for all UNLV Olympic sports.
