LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Former UNLV baseball outfielder
Max Smith and current member of the Elizabethton Twins (Rookie Advanced) was named an Appalachian League Postseason All-Star.
Smith, a four-year Rebel letterwinner, was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 31st round of the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Draft. Smith was assigned to the Tennessee-based Twins on June 18, and has played in a total of 53 games.
At the plate, Smith has posted a .291 batting average with 60 hits, 36 runs scored and 27 RBI. He's registered a .456 slugging percentage with help from 19 extra-base hits (11 doubles, seven home runs and one triple). Additionally, he has produced two seven-game hitting streaks.
The native of Tucson, Arizona (Canyon Del Oro High School), notched single-game highs in both runs (three) and RBI (four) in 3-for-5 performance – a 14-4 Elizabethton win – last week against the Johnson City Cardinals (St. Louis).
Smith concluded his senior season and collegiate career in May after he was tabbed a Mountain West All-Conference Second Team selection. In 2019, he led the Rebels in RBI (49) and tied for the top spot in home runs (10). He was second in run (40), doubles (16), total bases (111), slugging (.498) and walks (31) as well as multiple-RBI games (12).
Smith played a role in 11 Rebel victories this year, scoring the game-winning run six times – a team best – and knocking in the game-winning RBI five times – tying for the team lead.
