Rebels Announce Another Commitment

Jonathan Walters to join UNLV men's golf program in 2020-21.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) UNLV men's golf has received a signed commitment from Jonathan Walters to join the Rebel golf program, head coach Dwaine Knight announced Friday.

Walters attends South Mountain Community College in his hometown of Phoenix, Arizona, and will be a junior at UNLV this fall. He earned the Phil Mickelson Award as the National Junior College Athletic Association's Freshman of the Year and was named a First-Team All-American in 2019. He graduated from Canyon Del Oro High School in Oro Valley, Arizona, in 2018.

He captured medalist honors at the 2019 Gobbler Amateur, which was held in November at Sewailo Golf Course in Tucson, Arizona. He shot final-round 6-under-par 65, tying the tournament record at 12-under.

"Jonathan will bring a wealth of experience to our program," Knight said. "Having competed for junior college national championships with South Mountain over the past two seasons, he is a dedicated student-athlete who has demonstrated an ability to compete and win at a very high level. We look forward to having his energy in our program and are excited to welcome him to the Rebel family."

Walters also won the Arizona Christian University Fall Invitational in Phoenix, as well as the Lone Tree event, and placed third at the Ottawa University Fall Invitational before turning in a runner-up finish at the Region 1 Tournament in Mesa, Arizona. He placed seventh at the NJCAA Division II National Championship, which was held in Plymouth, Indiana.

As a senior in high school, he recorded a scoring average of 70.9.

Walters joins Gordan Brixi and Ben Sawaia to make up UNLV men's golf's 2020 recruiting class.
