LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams turned in a combined 21 top-5 event finishes, including four wins, during Sunday night's finals session of the UNLV Invitational at Jim Reitz Pool.
THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:
*Junior
Blanka Bokros garnered the first top-five individual finish on the women's side, logging a second-place time of 54.95 in the 100 fly.
*In a tight 200 free final heat, freshmen
Marta Klimek (1:48.98) and
Erika Carlson (1:49.55) provided respective second- and third-place finishes for the Rebels. The latter touched the final wall just under four-tenths of a second after the top finisher from UCLA Maya Wilson (1:48.60).
*Senior
Teneka Ash (1:52.87) held off the fourth-place challenger from ??? for the third-place finish in the 'B' final and 11th place overall.
*Leading the 200 free 'C' final wire-to-wire was freshman
Kayleigh Lovell for the heat win off a time of 1:51.01. The Scarlet & Gray freshman
Ashley Hughes came out on top in the 'D' final of the 200 free, taking first with a time of 1:52.34.
*Representing the Rebels in the 100 breast top 8 were junior
Tosia Iwanowska (1:0 2.77) in fourth and freshman
Jillian Moses in seventh (1:03.68). Junior
Ruby Howell (1:03.66) gave the Rebels their third heat win in the 'B' final and pitched in a ninth-place overall finish.
*Earlier in the night, senior
Gabby Lizzul (4:29.29) swam to an eighth-place finish in the 400 IM as one of the Rebel women's seven top-10 finishes.
*The last of the top-5 UNLV women's finishes was earned by junior diver
Vika Yanovska (273.30), who finished third in the 1-meter finals.
*In the 200 medley relay, UNLV's A team (Webb, Bartlett, Bokros, Cohen) shaved more than two seconds off their seed time with a season-best time of 1:41.25 to take second.
*Closing the night, the Scarlet & Gray's 'A' 800 free relay team (Lovell, Klimek, Bokros, Carlson) took second, surpassing its previous top time this year by over 12 seconds with a season-best mark of 7:22.75.
THE RUNDOWN – MEN:
*Sophomore
Adnan Beji won the 100 breaststroke event, clocking yet another NCAA 'B' cut time of 53.22 seconds. The mark was less than two-tenths of a second shy of his season-best swim in the event (53.04).
*The UNLV men also won the 400 IM with a 1-2-3 event sweep, including sophomore Mike Breitbart in first (3:55.08), freshman
Ian Belflower in second (3:57.98) and junior
McKay Mickelson in third (4:01.23). Freshman
Hilton Aitken chimed in with an additional fifth-place finish with a time of 4:02.92.
*The Rebel 'A' team (Bolanos, Beji, Ratiu, Hemmens) grabbed a 200 medley relay (1:25.75) win as part of the Scarlet & Gray's four victories.
*In the men's 3-meter diving event, sophomore
Dima Tereshchenko (308.30) spearheaded a 1-2 UNLV sweep with his second victory of the weekend. Junior
Jamie Spilchak (281.65) capped the sweep with his second-place finish.
*A trio of Rebels also placed inside the top 5 of the 100 fly, as senior
Steven Butler (48.77) freshman Kris Matuszewski (48.95) and sophomore
Bryson Huey (49.08) finished in second, third and fourth, respectively.
*Headlining another pair of top-5 UNLV finishes in the 200 free, senior Cam Castro finished second (1:38.63) and sophomore
Andrew Navarro (1:41.94) came just two spots behind in fourth.
*Charging ahead of the pack in the 800 free relay, UNLV's 'A' team (Castro, Navarro, Esenwein, Hemmens) prevailed for the win (6:41.03) in a 1-2 sweep that saw its 'B' squad (Matuszewski, Aitken, Ratiu, Huey) finish second (6:41.44).
