Rebels Open The 2022 Season With Home Opener Victory Over Michigan State

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team (1-0) couldn't have asked for a better start to the 2022 season with an errorless game against the Michigan State Spartans (0-1) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebels claimed the game 4-2, benefiting from the errors recorded by the Spartans.

The Scarlet & Gray batted .235 as a team, with James Gamble leading the team with a .667 average. Gamble, Henry Zeisler and Austin Kryszczuk lead the Rebels in RBIs with one each. Rylan Charles, Kryszczuk and Gamble all recorded two hits each, Charles led the Rebels in runs with two, followed closely behind by Zeisler and Diego Alarcon with one each. 

On the mound, Josh Ibarra (1-0) was credited with the win and Hayden Nierman with the save. Neirman came out of the bullpen in the eighth and threw two innings en route to his first win as a Rebel, while Ibarra threw 5.0 innings with four strikeouts. 

UNLV opened the game with one run in the home half of the first inning off an RBI single from Kryszczuk. The contest would remain 1-0 in favor of the Rebels until the fifth when back-to-back RBI's from Zeisler and Gamble brought the Rebels to 4-1. The score held until the top of the ninth when Peter Ahn hit a sac fly and gave Jack Frank the opportunity to run home, bringing the final score 4-2 in favor of the Rebels. 

NOTES:

-With Friday night's win, the Rebels continue the win streak over the Spartans, now leading 7-3
-This is the second consecutive season the Rebels have won their home opener  

UP NEXT: The Rebels and the Spartans will continue their four-game, nonconference series with a double header Saturday at Wilson Stadium. The first pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m.
