SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team team stayed perfect on the road with its third consecutive win Sunday afternoon against USD, 16-9, at Fowler Park & Cunningham Field.
The Rebels improved their record 4-3 overall and 3-0 away from home, while the Toreros fell 4-3.
UNLV took the lead in the top of the second inning with eight runs by Henry Zeisler, Joey Walls, Edarian Williams, Eric Bigani, Rylan Charles, Gianni Horvat, Austin Pfeifer and Austin Kryszczuk. The Toreros answered back with a run of their own to wrap up the second inning 8-1. San Diego began to chip away at the deficit with a homer from Jack Costello in the third frame (8-2).
A home run from Zeisler in the fourth brought Alarcon and Kryszczuk home too, making the score 11-2. Bigani went into the top of the sixth full force, hitting a homer that brought home Williams and Walls and pushed the Rebels to a 12-run lead. A grand slam from Kevin Sim at the bottom of the sixth would add four more runs for San Diego, followed by an RBI that would end the frame 14-7.
Another run from Pfeifer in the eighth would put the Rebels at an eight-run lead, followed by an additional run from Alarcon at the top of the ninth frame and would bring UNLV to a nine-run lead, 16-7. The Toreros added two runs at the bottom of the ninth and finished the game 16-9.
Noah Mattera (1-0) earned his first win of the season after going 3.1 innings, only allowing five hits, three runs and striking out two.
Ian Churchill (0-1) was saddled with the loss after pitching 2.0 innings, allowing five hits, eight runs and only two strikeouts.
The Scarlet & Gray now leads the overall series between the two programs, 17-16.
UP NEXT: UNLV will return to Las Vegas and Earl E. Wilson Stadium for a single-game midweek contest against Utah March 1, followed by five back-to-back contests featuring a three-game series against Cal Poly (March 4-5) and a two-game match-up against Utah Valley (March 7-8).
