SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – Six RBI singles in the top of the fifth frame propelled the UNLV baseball team to an eight-run lead to outlast San Jose State, 14-11, during the first game of a three-game series Friday night at Excite Ballpark in San Jose,
The Rebels saw their record improve to 14-8 (7-0 MW), while the Spartans dropped to 12-10 (5-5 MW).
REBEL OF THE GAME: Hank Zeisler went 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored for the Rebels.
TURNING POINT: The Scarlet & Gray had a one-run lead going into the top of the fifth, only for six back-to-back RBI singles and one run scored from a balk, to bring the Rebels up to an eight-run lead.
Nick Rupp (3-0) earned the win after pitching 3.0 innings of relief with four punchouts and allowing four runs on four hits.
Hayden Neirman (S,3) recorded his third save of the season after going 2.0 innings of relief, allowing one run off of three hits and two strikeouts.
Jonathan Clark (1-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season after pitching 2.2 innings, allowing seven runs on five hits and only one strikeout.
UP NEXT: UNLV will continue the three-game conference series against San Jose State Saturday, at Excite Ballpark in San Jose. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m.
