SURPRISE, Ariz. (UNLVrebels.com) – The UNLV baseball Team (1-2) closed out the third day of the Sanderson Ford Collegiate Baseball Classic on Sunday night, facing off against Xavier (2-1). The Musketeers claimed an early lead and overcame the Rebels, the Scarlet & Gray falling on a final score of 10-1.
JP Hefft stood as the Rebels' lone multi-hit batter, earning the team's RBI as the three-hole hitter in the lineup.
Paul Myro IV had pushed a single through the left side of the field to open up the top of the third inning, advancing to third through the next couple batters. Hefft's at bat resulted in a single in the same area as PM4, driving him home to cut the lead to two at the time.
UNLV was also able to force a handful of walks throughout the match;
Cooper Sheff,
Dean Toigo,
Brendan O'Sullivan,
Cole Koniarsky and
Vincent Gamberdella each picking up one. Toigo, Koniarsky and
Elijah Rodriguez also picked up hits during the Sunday game.
Evan Vasiliou appeared on the mound in the first Rebel start of his career, pitching 3.2 innings of work for the squad. The redshirt sophomore excelled in the first inning, all three outs picked up were all strikeouts; two by swinging and one looking.
Reese Lueck and
Colton Sundloff also appeared in the contest for their start to the season,
Cody Albright tossing the final two innings of action and only allowing one hit in the eight batters he faced.
The defense was able to register a double play in the bottom of the fifth, Sheff picking up a ground ball as the baserunner headed to second base. Connecting with
JP Hefft, the second baseman was able to reach the ball to O'Sullivan to clear the bases and make two outs.
"When you don't play well against quality teams, you get exposed," stated head coach
Stan Stolte. "We've been constantly chasing runs the last two games and pressing offensively. All three teams in the last two games are at least regional-caliber teams, we've just got to keep grinding."
