SAN DIEGO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team dropped their second straight game against San Diego State, 5-3, on Saturday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium
The Hustlin' Rebels (14-12, 2-6 MW) were led by Cole Koniarsky's two-hit effort, while Chase Ditmar, Brendan O'Sullivan, Gunnar Myro and Dwight Allen II each had a hit against the Aztecs (8-19, 4-4 MW).
HOW IT WENT DOWN:Â After a scoreless first inning, Myro reached on a fielder's choice and Koniarsky scored from second via a throwing error by the shortstop for a 1-0 lead. The Aztecs would bring home a run in the second and two more in the third for a 3-1 lead. Allen II came through for an RBI single down the right field line that brought home Koniarsky to cut the deficit to one, 3-2. San Diego State added an insurance run off a double in the bottom of the fourth inning to increase the lead to two, 4-2. The following inning, the Aztecs scored an unearned run off a sacrifice fly for a 5-2 advantage. San Diego State retired the Scarlet & Gray in order in the fifth and sixth inning, and the Rebels left a runner on base in the seventh and eighth inning. In the top of the ninth inning, UNLV was able to get a run in on an RBI groundout from pinch hitter Mikey Cruz Jr., and with the tying run at the plate, JP Hefft grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.
QUOTABLE: "We have done nothing to stop their momentum. Their starting pitcher got on a roll again and just dominated us. Again, we had three walks and made a throwing error that all scored. On the road, you have no chance of overcoming that. Have to bounce back tomorrow."
-Head Coach Stan Stolte
