Hustlin’ Rebels Kick Off Week Early Against Sun Devils

TEMPE, Ariz. (UNLVrebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team (8-5) faced off in its first of two games this season against the Arizona State Sun Devils (9-4) on Tuesday night, playing in Phoenix Municipal Stadium. The Rebels couldn't overcome the Arizona State offense, falling on a final score of 7-0.

UNLV picked up five hits over the course of the contest, JP Hefft being the lone batter in the lineup to accrue multiple hits in the game. The other batters to gather a hit included Dean Toigo, Brendan O'Sullivan and Gunnar Myro. The program also recorded free trips to first base five times against the Sun Devil pitching staff, O'Sullivan getting two while Elijah Rodriguez, Isaac Rodriguez and Chase Ditmar each picking up one.

The Rebels tossed five pitchers in Tuesday's contest, Sam Simon picking up the start and contributing three innings of work. Will Marquart was the only other Rebel to throw multiple innings, while Mason Dillow, Michael Taylor and Alex Overbay each getting an inning. Taylor's outing was an efficient four-batter performance, only allowing a single hit in his inning of work.

The Scarlet & Gray threatened to score several times in the contest, putting runners in score position five different innings. Rebel runners even touched third base in the second, seventh and eighth innings, the second inning holding I. Rodriguez and O'Sullivan on second and third base with one out.

"ASU sped the game up and we didn't do a good job of being able to slow it down. They threw some good arms at us and we missed out on a couple early opportunities, we just never got anything going" commented head coach Stan Stolte. "They were just better in all phases tonight, but we'll learn and keep improving."
