LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV (18-19, 5-11 MW) opened their home series against New Mexico (21-16, 9-7 MW) with a 13-7 loss on Thursday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. Dean Toigo broke through in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run home run, but the Lobos responded by scoring five runs in the third inning and added a pair of runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth inning.
HOW IT WENT DOWN: UNLV struck first with a two-run homer off the bat of Toigo in the bottom of the first inning. The early blast, following a leadoff single by JP Hefft, gave the Rebels a quick 2-0 lead. The Lobos tagged UNLV starter Carson Lane for five runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run double from Akili Carris and a sacrifice fly from Jordy Oriach. After a pair of solo home runs in the fourth by Josh McAlister and Will Asby, the Lobos extended their lead to 7-2. They continued to pour it on in the fifth and sixth, including back-to-back homers from Oriach and Ethan Ott in the sixth to stretch the margin to 11-2. The bottom of the seventh inning saw Toigo record a two-run double, which sparked a four-run rally. Dwight Allen II added a two-RBI single as the Hustlin' Rebels clawed back to 11-6. New Mexico's Ott hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the game further out of reach at 13-6. UNLV added a run in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk to Cole Koniarsky, but it wasn't enough to threaten the Lobos' lead.
QUOTABLE: "Their pitcher did a great job on a windy night that was favoring the offense. He dominated us from the second through the sixth inning. We gave up too many free passes and they made us pay. They controlled the strike zone way better than we did from both a pitcher and hitters standpoint."
-Head Coach Stan Stolte
