LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's tennis team closed its regular season with a 4-3 loss to in-state rival UNR on Thursday night at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The contest was part of the Silver State Series presented by America First Credit Union and also served as Senior Day for the squad's only senior, Thomas Navarro, who was honored in a ceremony before first serve.
The Rebels fell to 7-11 overall and finished 1-5 in the Mountain West while the Wolf Pack improved to 12-8 and 2-3.
UNR took the key doubles point to start things by winning at the second and third positions in the lineup. That forced the hosts to have to win four of six singles matches – and they nearly pulled it off.
After the Pack won a quick match at No. 6 to take a 2-0 lead, the Rebels stormed ahead with three sweeps of their own. Vitaliy Horovoy downed Remy Tregoures, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4; Ilia Snitari remained undefeated at the top spot with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Youssef Kadiri; and Illia Maksymchuk finished off Lucas Hammond, 6-3, 6-1, on court two. Both remaining matches split sets but UNLV was ultimately unable to take either point.
UP NEXT: The Rebels await their seeding for next week's Mountain West Tournament, which will kick off Wednesday at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas.
