LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Hustlin' Rebels (23-20, 9-12 MW) put an emphatic stamp on their weekend series against San Diego State (15-30, 10-11 MW), erupting for a 10-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium to complete a dominant three-game sweep of the Aztecs. UNLV's sweep was also its first in conference play this season.
HOW IT WENT DOWN: San Diego State got on the board early in the top of the first inning with a solo home run from Nevan Noonan after a leadoff single and a double play threatened to stall the Aztecs' momentum. CJ Moran then doubled to right-center, but a fielder's choice ended the threat. The second inning was more of the same as SDSU got a runner on via walk, but stranded him, while UNLV managed a pair of hits from Brendan O'Sullivan and Cooper Sheff, but failed to push across a run after O'Sullivan was picked off. In the third, the Rebels capitalized on defensive miscues. A walk to Paul Myro IV and a single by Dean Toigo set up an opportunity, and an error by the second baseman allowed UNLV to tie the game 1-1. The Aztecs responded in the fourth, reclaiming the lead with a pair of runs. Daniel Arambula led off with a double and scored on Zane Kelly's RBI double down the right field line. Kelly then advanced to third and came home on a sacrifice fly by Evan Sipe, giving San Diego State a 3-1 lead.
The bottom of the fourth saw Sheff single to lead off the frame and Dwight Allen II launched a two-run homer to left-center, tying the game at 3-3. In the fifth, Allen II struck again, blasting his second home run of the game, another solo shot to left center giving UNLV its first lead at 4-3. Chase Gallegos doubled, Myro IV walked and Toigo delivered the knockout punch with a three-run homer to right field for a 7-3 cushion. In the sixth, Sheff continued his torrid series by drilling a three-run homer of his own, bringing in O'Sullivan and Konairsky, and pushing the lead to 10-3. That capped a stretch where the Rebels scored nine unanswered runs. The pitching staff held firm the rest of the way. After allowing three runs in the first four innings, the Rebels' arms locked down the Aztecs. San Diego State managed just three hits over the final five frames and never advanced a runner past third base. The bullpen was particularly efficient, highlighted by Alex Navarrete closing the door in the final two innings.
