Hustlin' Rebels Suffer Loss To Utah Valley

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team (17-16) faced off against Utah Valley (22-11) on Tuesday afternoon, competing in the second game of a five game homestand. The Wolverines offense didn't falter against the Rebels, as UNLV fell 13-1 after eight innings.

HOW IT WENT DOWN: The game started with Utah Valley jumping to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a double by Landon Frei and a wild pitch by starting pitcher Mason Dillow. The Rebels were unable to generate any offense in the opening frame, going three-up, three-down. Utah Valley extended its lead with a three-run outburst in the fourth inning, highlighted by a pair of doubles and a two-RBI double from Jimmy De Anda. They added to their dominance with a two-run home run from Frei in the fifth, followed by another four runs in the eighth. UNLV's lone run came in the sixth inning, when a fielding error allowed Elijah Rodriguez to score from second base on a Cole Koniarsky single. However, the Rebel offense was held in check for most of the game, managing just one hit through the first five innings.

QUOTABLE: "Coming into today with both pitching staffs being pretty thin, it was up to someone to step up. Unfortunately, their guy did and we struggled. Everyone of our relievers walked the first guy they faced which always leads to a possible big inning. Nine of their runs scored were walks or hit by pitches, which should never happen at this level."
-Head Coach Stan Stolte

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Rebels' 10 walks and three hit by pitches is the sixth time this season the team has given up double-digit free bags in a game.
-Paul Myro IV, Jayden Hertl, Cole Koniarasky and Cooper Sheff all earned a hit in Tuesday's showdown.
-Mason Dillow was credited with the loss after pitching three innings where he gave up two earned runs with one walk and four strikeouts.
-Koniarsky has stretched his hitting streak to five games.

UP NEXT: UNLV will hit the road and return to conference action where they will face Air Force for a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 11 at 2 p.m. PT.
