Rebels Overpower San Jose State In Series Opener

SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Hustlin' Rebels (25-20, 10-12 MW) dismantled their way to a 19-5 eight-inning run-rule victory over San Jose State (22-24, 9-13), fueled by two innings where they scored eight runs on Friday night at Excite Ballpark. UNLV has now won a season-high six straight games and have scored 36 runs in their last two games.

HOW IT WENT DOWN: After a quiet first inning from both squads, the Hustlin' Rebels erupted for eight runs in the second inning. The Rebels exploded for eight runs on five hits, aided by multiple walks, a key San Jose State error and a trio of wild pitches. The inning was punctuated by a three-run homer to center field by Cole Koniarsky. The outfielder finished the game 2-for-3 with six RBI, including a bases-clearing double in the eighth that capped UNLV's eight-run frame and pushed the score to 19-4. He also walked three times and scored four runs, reaching base in all six of his plate appearances. The Rebels benefited from 14 walks and five wild pitches by the San Jose State pitching staff, who cycled through five arms trying to stop the bleeding. In the decisive second inning, UNLV got RBI contributions from Dwight Allen II (2-for-5, 3 RBI), Paul Myro IV and Dean Toigo, who added a sacrifice fly. San Jose State briefly showed life in the bottom of the second and third innings, plating single runs in each. UNLV starting pitcher Carson Lane pitched into the fifth before handing the ball off to reliever Evan Vasiliou, who was dominant over three innings, striking out four and allowing one earned run. Despite a late push from San Jose State in the bottom of the eighth, which included a leadoff triple and a run-scoring groundout, it was too little, too late. The Rebels had already crossed the 10-run threshold with their second eight-run inning in the top of the eighth. Koniarsky's double cleared the bases and a wild pitch brought him home to seal the final score at 19–5. The 19 runs were the most UNLV has scored in a game this season and marked their highest run total in conference play.

QUOTABLE: "We were fortunate tonight to jump out to a big lead. San Jose State has plenty of good arms they didn't use today, so obviously tomorrow will be a tough game. Happy with the energy we brought today."
-Head Coach Stan Stolte
