SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Hustlin' Rebels' (26-21, 11-13 MW) bid to complete a comeback fell just short in the series finale to San Jose State (24-24, 10-14) on Sunday afternoon at Excite Ballpark. UNLV's seven-game winning streak came to an end with the loss.
HOW IT WENT DOWN: San Jose State jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first. After Carson Lane was able to retire the leadoff hitter, the Spartans mounted a two-out rally. Rocco Chamizo singled up the middle and Jake McCoy followed with an RBI single to bring home the game's first run. Jeriah Lewis then drove in Chamizo with a single to right, putting San Jose State up 2-0 before the inning ended. UNLV struggled to generate offense early, going down in order in the first inning and managing just one baserunner in the second. However, they began to claw back in the third inning when Dean Toigo launched a solo home run to right field to cut the deficit in half. The Rebels tied the game in the top of the sixth after a leadoff double from Cole Koniarsky and a bunt single by Brendan O'Sullivan set the table. Dwight Allen II's sacrifice fly to right scored Koniarsky, evening the score at 2-2. In the bottom of the seventh, Caballero turned the tide back in the Spartans' favor with a solo home run to left field, putting San Jose State up 3-2. Two batters later, Chamizo drew a walk and McCoy again delivered in a big spot with an RBI double, extending the lead to 4-2. In the top of the ninth, Toigo ripped a double to right, and Nicky Garritano followed with a single to center, putting runners on the corners with one out. A wild pitch allowed Toigo to score, narrowing the gap to 4-3, but that would be as close as the Rebels would get. With the tying run on second, JP Hefft struck out looking, and Koniarsky's flyout to right field sealed the Spartans' victory.
QUOTABLE: "San Jose State threw a couple good arms at us and we never really got anything going. The couple of times we had chances, we took bad at-bats. Happy with winning the series, but still need to take care of business ourselves and not rely on help."
-Head Coach Stan Stolte
