SANTA CLARA, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Hustlin' Rebels stormed back for a 5-4 extra-inning victory over the Santa Clara Broncos, erasing a two-run deficit before pushing across the go-ahead run in the 10th inning on Friday night at Stephen Schott Stadium. With the win, the Scarlet & Gray extended its winning streak to six games.
HOW IT WENT DOWN: UNLV (8-2) struck first in the opening frame as Drew Barragan delivered the early blow, launching a two-run homer to left center field to give the Rebels a 2-0 advantage. Santa Clara (4-5) answered quickly, trimming the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the first on an RBI double. The Broncos evened the score in the second when Andrew Rayment doubled home a run, surging ahead in the third inning. Santa Clara's Max Ross sparked the rally with a double before Will Anderson singled him home. Later in the inning, GMateo arcia added an RBI single, putting Santa Clara in front 4-2.
UNLV threatened in the sixth with Marcos Rosales doubling and Barragan singling, but the Rebels couldn't capitalize. UNLV's Gavyn Bowen, Cody Albright and Jase Evangelista combined to hold the Broncos scoreless over the final seven innings, keeping the deficit at two and setting the stage for late drama. Trailing 4-2 with two outs and a Cooper Sheff on second, pinch hitter Gavin Taylor delivered the biggest swing of the night. On a 0-2 pitch, he drove a game-tying, two-run homer to left field, knotting the score at 4-4.
Evangelista preserved the tie in the bottom of the ninth, stranding a hit batter and forcing extra innings.In the 10th, Barragan sparked the decisive rally with a two-out single through the right side. Jonny Rodriguez followed by ripping a double to left field, scoring Barragan from first to give the Rebels a 5-4 lead. The Broncos went down in order in the bottom half of the inning, as UNLV sealed the comeback win.
