Doubles Domination Not Enough To Fend Off Cyclones

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's tennis team had a pair of match points but could not finish off Iowa State in a heartbreaking 4-3 loss on a sunny Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

In what was the first-ever meeting of the programs, the Rebels fell to 3-1 while the Cyclones of the Big 12 Conference improved to 2-2.

UNLV blew away the Cyclones in doubles play to earn a 1-0 lead. Veronika Kliuch and Eszter Kis-Czako downed Ashlee Narker and Julia Camblor, 6-1, on court two before Kaho Oyama and Sofiia Sokolvak won by the same score at No. 3 over Gabriella Kellner and Valentina Vargas. The Rebels also led 5-2 at the top spot over ISU's nationally ranked duo when the point was clinched.

In singles play, the hosts stayed hot, winning the first set on four of six courts. Of those, however, Kis-Czako was the only Rebel to win in straight sets, downing Alicia Dale, 7-5, 6-3, at the fourth spot. Kliuch eventually earned her team its third point by toughing out her match at No. 1 over Narker, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. ISU would pick up wins at number two and three and then got to three points with a comeback victory at number five.

That moved all eyes to court six where UNLV's Adi Bitton was battling Valeska San Martin. The duo split sets but Bitton led 6-5 and had double-match point before San Martin rallied to force a tiebreaker and ultimately win it, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4).

REBEL OF THE MATCH: Kliuch won in both doubles and at the top of the lineup in singles to keep her team alive. The sophomore improved to 11-2 in singles, including 4-0 in dual matches.

UP NEXT: UNLV gets a week off before hosting another Big 12 foe in the form Colorado on Feb. 20 starting with doubles play at 10 a.m. Admission to all matches at Fertitta Tennis Complex is free of charge.
