MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball opened play at the Cambria Classic, falling 10-0 in seven innings to Minnesota on Friday night at U.S. Bank Stadium.
UNLV (10-5) recorded its first hit in the opening inning when Reggie Bussey singled through the left side, but he was caught stealing moments later and Minnesota (10-3) retired the next two batters to end the frame. The Golden Gophers struck first in the bottom half as Jack Spanier led off with a single and later scored when Weber Neels doubled down the left-field line to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead. Minnesota added two more runs in the second inning. Davis Hamilton and Jameson Martin opened the frame with walks before Michael Lippe drove in a run with a single. Jack Bello later lifted a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-0.
The decisive inning came in the third. After Neels worked a walk and Charlie Sutherland reached with a single, Ty Allen broke the game open with a three-run home run to left field. Spanier capped the five-run inning with a two-run double to push the advantage to 8-0.
UNLV struggled to break through offensively throughout the evening. Ayden Garcia singled in the second inning and Gunnar Myro added a single in the sixth, while the Rebels also received a double from Nin Burns II in the seventh.
Minnesota added another run in the sixth when Easton Richter tripled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Neels, extending the lead to 9-0. The Golden Gophers ended the game in the bottom of the seventh via the run rule. After relief pitcher Cal Barna loaded the bases with a hit and two walks, Spanier drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home the final run and seal the 10-0 victory.
