Rebs Give Bulldogs A Case Of The Mondays

FRESNO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – The 62nd-ranked UNLV women's tennis team wrapped up its road schedule on Monday with a 4-1 win over Fresno State at the Spalding Wathen Tennis Center. The match was moved a day because of weather concerns in the valley, which created the unusual playing date to begin the work week.

The Rebels, who have won 13 of their last 14 outings and went 5-0 away from Las Vegas this season, improved to 16-3 overall and remain in a three-way tie for first place in the Mountain West with a 9-1 mark. The Bulldogs fell to 8-14 and 1-9.

In doubles play, the Rebels won the two completed matches to take the point. Hudson Hawkins and Nikol Mircheva blanked Eliza Dunbar and Klara Vukicevic, 6-0, at the top spot while Kaho Oyama and Sofiia Sokolvak downed Sofia Pizzoni  and Paulina Montiel, 6-2, on court three to clinch it.

The visitors struggled at the beginning of singles, winning only half of the six first sets, before finding their footing in Fresno. Hawkins was off first, downing Giulia Lodovici, 6-3, 6-2, at the third position; Sokolvak defeated Louna Cormier, 7-6, 6-1, at No. 6; and then Mircheva ended things with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Pizzoni on court two.

REBEL OF THE MATCH: Silverado High School grad Hudson Hawkins helped with the doubles shutout and then raced to another point in singles play to improve to 17-7, including 12-3 in duals, since transferring back home to Las Vegas.

UP NEXT: UNLV, looking to earn at least a share of the league's regular-season championship, hosts in-state rival UNR on Friday. The match, which starts with doubles at 10 a.m., is part of the Silver State Series presented by America First Credit Union. Admission to all matches at the Fertitta Tennis Complex is free of charge.
