LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball shook off an early deficit and unleashed a relentless offensive surge to defeat Washington State, 12-3, in game two of the series on Saturday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
HOW IT WENT DOWN: UNLV (23-16, 6-8 MW) trailed 2-0 after the first two innings as Washington State (20-19, 8-6 MW) capitalized on small-ball execution, including an RBI groundout in the first and an RBI single in the second. But the Scarlet & Gray quickly flipped the momentum with a power display that set the tone for the rest of the game. Cooper Sheff put the Rebels on the board in the second inning with a solo home run to deep left, cutting the deficit to 2-1. An inning later, Gavin Taylor ignited the comeback with a solo shot of his own before Marcos Rosales followed later in the frame with another blast to right, giving UNLV a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish.
The Rebels continued to apply pressure in the fourth when Gunnar Myro delivered an RBI double to score Taylor and extend the lead to 4-2. From there, UNLV's pitching staff settled in. After allowing two runs in the first two innings, starting pitcher Carson Lane combined to hold Washington State scoreless across four straight frames. UNLV broke the game open in the sixth inning with a three-run outburst. Myro added another RBI on a groundout before Rosales came through with a clutch two-run double to left, pushing the lead to 7-2.
The Rebels kept their foot on the gas in the seventh, capitalizing on a Washington State error and aggressive baserunning to plate three more runs. Taylor and Reggie Bussey each contributed RBI hits in the inning as UNLV extended its advantage to 10-2. The Cougars scratched across a run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly, but UNLV answered immediately in the bottom half. The Rebels drew bases-loaded traffic and plated two more runs via a walk and a sacrifice fly from Taylor, capping the scoring at 12-3.
