LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Playing in a record ninth consecutive Credit Union 1 Mountain West Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday, 72nd-ranked UNLV fell 4-1 at the hands of No. 57 San Diego State at the Darling Tennis Center.
The Rebels saw their six-match win streak snapped to finish their season at 19-4 overall while the Aztecs improved to 21-3 and will represent the conference in the NCAA Championship with the automatic bid.
UNLV, which has reached more MW finals than any other school (16) and played SDSU in them more than any other opponent (6) lost the key doubles point to start things and could not fully recover.
The Rebel duo of
Eszter Kis-Czako and
Veronika Kliuch won easily at the second spot over Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache, 6-1, before the Aztecs evened things with a 6-4 win on court three. The point would come down to the top position and Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley outlasted
Hudson Hawkins and
Nikol Mircheva in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (2).
UNLV came out strong in singles play, winning three first sets. Kis-Czako made it 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Clemens at No. 4 but SDSU got a pair of straight-setters and came back to take a three-set match to reach the requisite four points and earn the tourney crown in their final season in the league.
