LAS VEGAS - Fred Smith, UNLV Assistant to the Associate Athletic Director/SWA for the past 1.5 years, has resigned to accept a position as Assistant Athletic Director for Advancement at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Smith graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in economics in 1998 and immediately began working for the UNLV athletics department. He worked in the Office of NCAA Academic Services as an advising assistant and athletic academic advisor from August 1998 to June 1999. In July 1999 he started work in Olympic Sports Administration at UNLV where he served as assistant to Lisa Kelleher, who is the Associate Athletic Director/SWA. Smith also assisted with coordination and operations of the UNLV Women's Sports Foundation under Kelleher.

"Fred does an outstanding job cultivating donor relations and is truly genuine in his approach," Kelleher said. "He will be an asset for Cal Poly as he is passionate about improving opportunities for student athletes and knows it takes community resources to do so. We wish him great success."

While at UNLV, Smith served on the Committee for a Just and Inclusive University, was the chair of the UNLV Athletics Minority Opportunities Committee and was a UNLV Athletics Gender Equity Committee liaison.

"I am very excited about the opportunity ahead of me," Smith said. "Many thanks are due to members of the UNLV athletics department and the university community for their wisdom, inspiration and assistance. I have been truly blessed to work with many fantastic people here and will miss them very much. I have made some very good friends and created special bonds that will surely last a lifetime. More great things lay ahead for UNLV and I look forward to reflecting back, knowing I was a part of something special."
