LAS VEGAS -
At least 20 UNLV athletes and coaches will visit local elementary schools this week to read to various classes as part of Nevada Reading Week.
Nevada Reading Week, which falls during the first week of March each year in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, is a program designed to promote reading and literacy within the local elementary schools. The schools invite special guests to tell or read stories to classes and allow students to ask questions about the guests' life experiences.
UNLV Athletics has participated in the Nevada Reading Week program for four year. The school's involvement is coordinated through its Champs/Life Skills program that is responsible for an education community outreach service.
"We believe in Nevada Reading Week because it allows us to reach children at an important age and grade where they need to have positive role models," UNLV Champs/Life Skills coordinator Eric Toliver said. "It gives student-athletes a chance to put back into community and emphasize importance of literacy and staying in school."
