UNLV To Hold Mascot Tryouts

March 24, 2000

LAS VEGAS - UNLV Athletics will be holding tryouts for the school mascot, Hey Reb, on Thursday April 13.

This will mark the first time in the four years of the current mascot costume that there has been an official tryout to be Hey Reb. UNLV Athletics will award an academic scholarship to one student to be the full-time mascot and pay hourly wages to several part-time Hey Rebs.

The tryouts are open to current male and female UNLV students and high school seniors (pending UNLV admission). The costume requires applicants to be approximately 5'9'' to 6'2'' tall, athletic, flexible, and have a high level of endurance. Applicants will be judged by athletic ability, creativity and overall mascot appearance. Crowd simulations also will be used.

Potential Hey Rebs will also be required to put together their own personalized routine, involving music and props. To be eligible to receive the scholarship, applicants must be a registered UNLV student, maintain an overall 2.0 grade point average and work a minimum of 10 hours per week for community events and UNLV home games.

The tryouts will take place at the McDermott P.E. Building at 6:00 p.m. until approximately 9:00 p.m. Those interested in trying out must register. To register or to receive more information, call Ben Chulick in UNLV Sports Marketing at 895-0673.
