LAS VEGAS -
A UNLV student athletic trainer was named the recipient of a Far West Athletic Trainers
Association Scholarship.
The award was presented during the 2000 FWATA Clinical Symposium held at the Tropicana
Hotel. Junior Carolyn Irby was honored for her accomplishments both in the clinical
athletic training setting and the classroom.
To qualify, student athletic trainers must maintain a cumulative grade point average of
3.0 or better, be a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, perform with
distinction as a student athletic trainer, and have the intent to pursue the profession of
athletic training as their means of livelihood. Consideration is also given to their
participation in campus activities other than academic and athletic training.
This award is given in honor of Gail Weldon, as recognition of her pioneering work in the
sports medicine field. Weldon served as an athletic trainer at UCLA, was the first female
athletic trainer hired by the Amateur Basketball Association, and also became the first
female to serve with the International Olympic Committee.
Student athletic trainers from Nevada, Hawaii and California were eligible for the award.
Irby is a Sports Injury Management major with a GPA of 3.68.
