Ban Named Outstanding Rebel Of The Week

April 25, 2018
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -  UNLV men's golf senior Shintaro Ban  has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week  presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday. This marks the second straight week and the fourth time during the 2017-18 season Ban has earned the honor.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from  Monday  through  Sunday  as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

Ban, from San Jose, California, captured tournament medalist honors for the second straight week, this time with a first-place finish at the 2018 Mountain West Championship. The senior's individual title - his fourth of the 2017-18 season and fifth of his career - helped the No. 21 Rebels earn their third consecutive conference championship and fifth overall last weekend. Ban carded a tournament-low 7-under 65 during the final round to win the tournament by nine shots at 16-under 200. He set Mountain West individual records for total score (previous record: 202), score relative to par (previous record: 12-under) and margin of victory (previous record: four shots). He was the only student-athlete in the field to shoot three rounds in the 60s and finished with a tournament-high 20 birdies over 54 holes.

Ban, who became the seventh Rebel to win the MW individual crown, now ranks tied for third on the all-time UNLV men's golf career wins list with Kevin Penner (2009-13) and Jeremy Anderson (1996-00).  He also is tied for first for most wins in a season with Warren Schutte (1990-91).

Ban and the Rebels will make a NCAA-record 30th consecutive regional appearance, which will take place May 13-16. Regional sites and participants will be announced Wednesday, May 2, live on the Golf Channel.
