Petmecky Named Outstanding Rebel Of The Week

May 9, 2018
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -  UNLV softball senior Janine Petmecky  has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week  presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.

The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from  Monday  through  Sunday  as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.

Petmecky, a Riverside, California, native, had a career weekend to help the the Rebels capture their first three-game sweep over Fresno State in program history. Petmecky went 8-for-10 (.800) at the plate on the weekend - which included reaching base safely in her first 10 plate appearances of the series and 10 of 12 at-bats overall - to go along with six runs scored, four RBI, one triple and two home runs. The right-hander didn't just do it on offense though as she went 1-0 with a save and eight strikeouts in 10.0 innings pitched and didn't allow a hit in 3.0 innings of relief.

In the series opener, Petmecky went 4-for-4 and pitched her 13th complete game en route to her 18th win of the season, which is tied for second most wins in a single season all-time. She followed that with a 2-for-2 day in game two with two runs scored, two walks and a two-run home run in the fifth that gave the Rebels a 4-1 lead. She also entered the game in relief in the bottom half of the frame and pitched 2.1 scoreless innings for the save and the series victory. In Sunday's finale, she led off the game with an inside-the-park home run as part of a 2-for-4 day, then came in with one out in the seventh and got the final two outs to seal the victory.

The senior's performance landed her the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week award - the first by a UNLV softball player in program history. She was also named the Mountain West Player and Pitcher of the Week, marking just the second time in conference history the same player has earned both awards in the same week.

The Rebels wrap up the regular season at home this weekend, hosting Colorado State, May 10-12, on Senior Weekend at Eller Media Stadium.
