Strongman Competition Comes To Campus

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebel Football Foundation presents the GNC Pro Performance Vegas Strongman Challenge on Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. at the Ernie Becker Sr. Football Fields at Bill "Wildcat" Morris Rebel Park located on campus.

The contest will feature the nation's top strongmen competing for prize money and an opportunity to compete in ESPN's World's Strongest Man contest. Special guest appearances will be made by former World's Strongest Man Magnus Samualsson and four-time World's Strongest Man and ESPN broadcaster Bill Kazmaier. Segments of the contest may later be televised and broadcast nationally.

"I hope to see everyone out at Rebel Park on Saturday," said former America's Strongest Man and UNLV strength and conditioning coach Mark Philippi. "The UNLV Football Foundation has put together a great event and one in which the entire family can enjoy."

The contest events include the Terrible Herbst/Valvoline Tire Press, the Coors Keg Load, the Findlay Toyota Camry Lift, the Harrison Door Weight Carry, the Findlay Toyota SUV Pull and the Fuze Energy Drink Stone Load.

The contest will have giveaways, opportunities for crowd interaction and opportunities to receive autographs. Tickets for the event are $10 for adults and children 12 and under are free. As part of the GNC Pro Performance Vegas Strongman Challenge, the Palms Casino Resort will present the Ironmind Rolling Thunder Grip Championships sponsored by Rolling Rock on Friday at 6:00 pm in the Palapa Lounge. The grip championships will allow local men and women the opportunity to compete for prize money against the nation's top professional strength athletes. Prize money will be awarded to the top three overall competitors and to the top male and female local competitors. Admission is free.
