LAS VEGAS - UNLV junior golfer Chris Berry and senior softball player Julie Crandall have
been named the 1997-98 UNLV Olympic Sports Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year,
respectively.
Berry was selected by the olympic sports coaches to receive the honor, while
Crandall was chosen by the UNLV Womens Sports Foundation.
Berry, a member of the 1998 NCAA Champion UNLV golf team, led the Rebels to
their first team golf national championship by finishing in a second-place tie
at 16-under par in Albuquerque, N.M., last month.
Berry, who closed out the year with a stroke average of 72.95 in 39 rounds
this season, was also selected as an Honorable Mention All-American.
Crandall, a two-time Third Team All-American catcher, concluded her final
season with the Rebel softball team this year. In addition to being named
a 1998 All-American, she was Second Team All-WAC and First Team All-West
Region.
Crandall led the Rebels with a .361 batting average during the 1998 season.
She also led the team in home runs with nine, slugging percentage at .592 and
base on balls with 33.
Crandall ranks second in career home runs for UNLV with 20, is first in walks
with 111, third in runs with 127, third in RBI with 121, fourth in doubles
with 32, fourth in hits with 212 and is seventh in batting average at .324.
