July 16, 2001

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV athletics department was awarded five citations of excellence from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) at the organization's annual convention, the school announced Monday.

Director of media relations Andy Grossman, associate director Mark Wallington, assistant sports information directors Kevin Force and Brian Albertson and UNLV graphic arts coordinator Paul Palmer each earned at least one award for their work with the 17 Rebel sports.

Palmer, who has worked at UNLV for seven years, and Grossman, who enters his sixth season at the school and his second as director, took home first-in-the-district honors in the poster category with the 2000-01 men's basketball design.

Palmer also teamed with Albertson to win second in the district in the same category with the 2001 Hustlin' Rebel baseball poster.

Wallington and Palmer earned a Best in the Nation nod for their 2001 men's and women's tennis guide. The award was Wallington's third best-in-nation honor and 18th overall from CoSIDA during his eight-year career. He also picked up a citation of excellence in writing as his 2000 feature on Rebel quarterback Jason Thomas, "Few Doubting Thomas," earned him best in district for a student-athlete profile.

Force, who is entering his third season on campus, earned sixth in the nation for his 2000-01 men's golf guide, which also took top honors in the district.

District Eight consists of all schools in the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and the Canadian province of British Columbia.

CoSIDA was established in 1955 to serve SIDs and others associated with the promotion of college athletics. The organization boasts nearly 2,000 members.
